I work in a Configuration Management office. We use Windows 98 Startup Disk to boot into a preinstallation environment that runs Ghost.exe to begin imaging the machine with a ghost we've made. We are in charge of 200ish different workstations that we send disks to periodically that reformat and place on our new ghost. We have an issue currently where we have to send out two disks to achieve this.

The reason being that once the imaging has completed the computer is restarted. With disk 1 still being in the drive it will automatically go back into the Windows 98 Startup Menu and begin ghosting again.

I have no idea how to change the Windows 98 Startup Disk or to get Norton Ghost to quit restarting after imaging. It would be fine if it boote into the OS immediately after ghost, because the user removes the Disk once installing the software we've placed with the disk using Ghost Explorer. I'm not too technically trained for this position, but I need to find a solution.

Any help is appreciated. When you boot a standard windows 98 boot disk you get a couple choices: 1) Boot system without CD-Rom drivers 2) Boot system with CD-Rom drivers This menu comes from the config.sys file, it is usually set to default to the first choice after 30 seconds if no keypress is detected. You could add another choice to that menu and set it as default, one that would simply exit DOS. That way a user input would be needed to restore the system image and when it reboots later it will just boot the system since nobody will be there to start the recovery process again. I assume you must be sending out bootable CD's or DVD's and you need to update them once in a while?

Do you have a person who remakes these disks and is he she familiar with how they work? I am inserting a DVD made bootable by Nero into my machine. It boots into Windows 98 Startup Menu. I choose continue, where it then reformats my machine.

After the format it starts the ghost of Image to disk automatically. Once the ghost reaches 90% it asks for the second ghost. I split the ghost image so that it requires a disk swap. After disk 2 is complete, it then reboots. If I hadn't had it switch to disk 2, it would have begun the Windows 98 Startup Menu again to continue and reformat. I don't want it to reboot into the ghost every time.

Boot

It doesn't seem I am able to edit the Windows 98 Startup Menu to make it default to skip the reformat and ghosting after time runs out. As is if you don't select an option after 30 seconds it begins the prompt to press any key for reformat. I would rather it just default to start windows normally.

That way at least I can let time run out after it is done ghosting the machine and it will just start as is. Please tell me how to edit that Startup menu. I've been playing with the config file and can't get any changes to actually occur when I begin boot on our test machines. Edit: I was just discussing it with a coworker and it occured to me, that it doesn't matter to the end user what the options are if they are just informed what to select.
